My day began with The Ventures.
And led... via street musician's videos to...
Natalie Trayling
Her son says... "She was unique amongst her peers."
An interview...
The Incredible Life Story of Melbourne "Piano Lady" Natalie Trayling
Melbourne, Australia
Immigrants from Croatia, speaking no English...
Natalie's family was too poor to pay for piano lessons.
Now at school, a teacher learned of her desire to learn piano...
and arranged to give her music lessons...
almost free... for 8 weeks.
She was given a scholarship
to the Royal Academy of Music in London
but could not afford the travel and living expenses.
Did not go.
Married... four kids...
two girls died from tragedy and sickness.
House burned down. Lived in motel.
Motel sold, rent increased.
She was out on the street homeless.
"I was FREED" she says now.
Walked into a piano store, sat down, and played.
Began playing on the street... as a street musician.
Now her son records videos of her for YouTube.
She composes and plays her own music.
Her videos get millions of hits.
Today... she has an apartment and still performs... on the street.
In the video portrait, she is interviewed.
?? When you're performing, you don't ask for money.
"No. I don't ask. No I don't."
?? Would your life have been easier if you did have money.
"Would it have been easier.
I don't think it would have been much different.
It's something that is nothing to do with money."
On her daughters' deaths.
"I don't call it death."
?? Why?
"Because... death means REALLY... that's it!
I don't feel that they're gone.
I feel that they could be right here now... us talking.
I've never felt that they've ever had gone."
"Nothing has changed... just rearranged.
That's what happens with love...
you think it's gone, but it's only just changed."
Rather than record in a studio,
she wants to play out among the people.
"I've always thought that it was more than music.
You can't take away yesterday. It's been. You know?
However it is that things are...
whatever has brought this in existence...
knows exactly how to put things right
and as they are supposed to be."
