I won't say what the occasion was...
but it was a public performance
with many people in attendance.
I'll reveal this much... it was a vaccine protest event.
The daughter of one of the organizers of the event...
which was a somewhat patriotic event...
had been picked to sing a patriotic song.
She was probably 10 years old.
Her world debut.
Many people were recording the event on their phones.
It was being livestreamed to followers of the event.
People from around the world... would be interested in it.
It was a proud moment for all the speakers that night.
The girl had a passable singing voice...
and I could picture her... practicing in the mirror...
developing her performing style...
like all young dreamers might well do
when they are 10 years old... and like music.
She was introduced...
had the mic in her hand...
someone turned on a tape in the background...
to provide her musical accompaniment...
and she began singing the patriotic song...
one which I thought that EVERYONE knew...
but now... doesn't come to my mind... which one...
and the girl did not know the words.
You couldn't tell from looking at her...
or her family either...
that the words she sang were... not the right ones.
No one... batted an eye... that was noticeable, anyway.
Now... when I grew up... we sang those songs all the time!
We sang them at school and at Girl Scouts...
we sang them at ball games and picnics...
we enjoyed a good excuse to sing another patriotic song!
America has such great patriotic songs...
really fine words and music...
giving respect for this grand country we love.
We have a lot of songs from our wars...
and... thinking about it...
mankind is still at the battle for freedom...
and after we finish our game of "52-card pickup"
maybe we'll realize... that perfect lifestyle
that fulfills all of our needs and our dreams.
We're getting there... we're getting there.
Well... shall we all renew our familiarity with these songs?
Here's just a few oldies but goodies...
